The A1 Insurance Services was established by current president and founder Craig Knepp in 1991. Our focus is Business, Auto, Home, and Life Insurance. The world can be an unpredictable place. We believe in thinking “out of the box,” when it comes to insurance and your protection. All our energy, commitment, and efforts are focused on you, the client, and your satisfaction.
Craig Knepp started his first insurance agency in 1992; and in 2003 combined his agencies into A1 Insurance Services, Inc, which is a family owned and managed agency with over 100 years risk management experience. The agency is the risk manager for over $1.5 billion in client assets. Craig remains active in the business.
Craig is a Veteran, having serviced 5 years in the USAF, including tours in several hostile locations. Prior to insurance, Craig was Asst Manager for Giant Foods, and VP at several large banks in Virginia, and later for 5 years was comptroller for a large manufacturing concern, and for 2 years was Adjunct Professor at J S Reynolds community college. Craig is a magna cum laude alumni of Lord Fairfax Community College, magna cum laude alumni of VCU University, summa cum laude alumni of Averett University, holding an MBA, specializing in Business acumen; with emphasis in accounting and risk management.
Shortly after beginning his insurance career, Craig began studying insurance topics in great detail, and found, in 1994, Freedom Financial School for Insurance, and was the second school in Virginia to obtain Continuing Education Sponsorship Certification. The School is the oldest school of its kind still active in Virginia. Craig authored 5 insurance text books still used today for insurance licensing and continuing education. Craig estimates he has taught/trained over 10,000 agents in Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland since 1994.

Jessica Mastin joined our office in March 2017 with over 10 years of insurance experience. She specializes in working with our personal lines clients but also helps manage our commercial client accounts. She graduated from the University of Lynchburg in 2008 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis in K-6 Education. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends and traveling. Jessica lives in Caroline County with her husband, DJ and their 4 dogs.

Robert S Trainham started with A1 Insurance Services, Inc in 2019. He specializes in Commercial Insurance Accounts. Robert holds a bachelor’s degree in Fire Science from Columbia Southern University. Robert was a firefighter for 18 years with two different departments in the Richmond-Metro Area. Robert resides in Hanover County with his wife and 4 kids.
